AAA Animation on Indie Scale



In this GDC 2017 session, Phoenix Labs' Simon Unger explains the animation best practices they've learned so far to create AAA-grade animation for Dauntless on an indie budget. Dauntless is a "monster slayer" type of game, inspired by the Monster Hunter serie.

As this post is about AAA animation on a small budget, please find below the GDC video a comparison between the result of Dauntless versus Monster Hunter World (by Capcom).

(On a personal note, having only played the first beta of Dauntless back then, and having not played Monster Hunter World, I was fairly impressed by the quality of the animation for a small (yet composed of veterans) indie studio).
